Description

This picture, located nearly at the galactic anti-center (galactic longitude is 189 degrees), is a red carpet of celebrities, and includes, as a bonus, the two asteroids 5 Astraea (blurred because of its fast motion) and the smaller 476 Hedwig.

Picture 1 (Animated): The asteroid 5 Astraea motion between 25 Feb 2024 20:15 and 26 Feb 2024 02:11 UT. The movie has been extracted by the sub-exposures taken to create the main picture above. More detail in the dedicated entry here.

Sh2-248
This is Jellyfish nebula, a 30000-year-old supernova remnant (SNR 189.1+03.0, Gem A, IC 443), distant 1500 pc.
In the southeast the blast wave is interacting with a very dense and clumpy molecular cloud. The blast wave has been strongly decelerated by the cloud and is moving with an estimated velocity of roughly 30–40 km/s.
In the northeast, where the brightest optical filaments are located, the SNR is interacting with a very different environment. The forward shock has encountered a wall of neutral hydrogen (HI), and is propagating into a less dense medium with a much higher velocity (80–100 km/s) than in the southern ridge.

CXOU J061705.3+222127
It is the neutron star remnant of the event that likely 30000 years ago created the Jellyfish Nebula. It is traveling at approximately 800000 km/h away from the site of the explosion.

Sh 2-249
This HII region is ionized by members of the Gem OB1 association.
Recent measurements (2015) confirm that its distance is 2100 pc, therefore it lies behind SNR 189.1+03.0.

M35 and NGC2158
This popular couple of open clusters (distance 900 and 3400pc respectively) is portrayed and described here in a longer focal image.

Sh2-252 and Sh2-247
The Monkey Head nebula (NGC 2174) contains five star clusters, including two which form the stellar group NGC 2175. It lies at 2000 pc in the near side of the Perseus arm within the Gemini giant molecular clouds. It is probably connected to Sh 2-247 by CO filaments.

Sh2-253
Sh2-253 is ionized by stars in the Bochum 1 star cluster, including the B 1.5 V class LS V +20 40.

NGC2129
NGC 2129 is an open cluster approximately 22200 pc away with a diameter of about 10.4 ly. It is a very young cluster whose age has been estimated at 10 million years.

IC2156 and IC2157
IC2157 is an open cluster and the neighbor NGC2156 might be a part of it.
Not well studied object, because of its scarce luminosity, has an age of 63 My.
It is located 2000 pc away. The large distance is responsible for its low apparent luminosity.
