Description

The Cone Nebula and the Fox Fur Nebula are two of the most striking features in the NGC 2264 star-forming region, located in the constellation Monoceros. The Cone Nebula is a large, dark nebula that gets its name from its distinctive shape, which resembles a cone. It is located about 2,500 light-years from Earth and is thought to be home to a number of young, hot stars. The heat from these stars causes the gas and dust in the nebula to glow, giving it its characteristic red color. The Fox Fur Nebula is a smaller, diffuse nebula that is located just to the north of the Cone Nebula. It gets its name from its resemblance to a fox's fur. The Fox Fur Nebula is thought to be a remnant of a supernova explosion that occurred millions of years ago. The explosion scattered the gas and dust in the nebula, creating the beautiful, wispy filaments that we see today.
