Sh2 224 is a large, but very faint supernova remnant (SNR) in the constellation Auriga. This is one of the most challenging targets I've shot, comparable to OU4 (that pesky squid in Cepheus). I stopped here at 50 hours, as I was able to see most of what I expected in some early test stacks. I also got tired of waiting to see how it would come out, as I have been collecting data for around 5 months, from October to February.

This was the first time I shot 1200s subs, which saved disk space but wasted a lot of shooting time as many more were corrupted by poor tracking or seeing and I ended up only using about 2/3rds of the data.

The signal required so much stretching that I ended up finding new flaws in my flat images that had not been apparent before. Thankfully I have some experience generating synthetic flats to fix issues like this (just subtracting out a copy of the image after heavy median filtering). Topaz was key to cleaning up the resulting signal. Even after so many hours there was still a ton of noise. I'm always careful to avoid halucinating extra detail with AI based software, so I set the sharpening value to zero and 'preserve original detail' to around 70. This let me stretch the data much farther than I had originally intended (too far?). I'll post the starless single channel data later so you can judge for yourself.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
