Description

SHO with RGB data for star color. The RGB image was also overlaid to add some of the dark red to the image, and to enhance the reflection nebula in star cluster.
I'd never imaged this area because I'd always thought it was kinda boring.
I was definitely wrong... a lot going on here:
  • Star Cluster (NGC 2264): At the center of the Christmas Tree Nebula is a young open cluster of stars, designated as NGC 2264. This cluster is relatively young, with an age of about 2 to 3 million years. It contains hot, massive stars that emit intense ultraviolet radiation, causing the surrounding hydrogen gas to glow.
  • Cone Nebula: Attached to the bottom of the Christmas Tree Nebula is the Cone Nebula, a dark molecular cloud of gas and dust that is backlit by the nearby bright stars. The shape of the Cone Nebula resembles a dark triangular cone, and it is a region where new stars are forming.
  • Fox Fur Nebula: Adjacent to the Christmas Tree Nebula is another interesting feature called the Fox Fur Nebula, which is a region of reflection nebula illuminated by the light from nearby stars. The interplay of light and dark structures in this region creates a visually striking appearance.
  • Variable Stars: Within the NGC 2264 cluster, there are several variable stars, including the well-known variable star S Monoceros.
