Eastern Veil Nebula (NGC 6992 / IC 1340)

- Distance: Approximately 2,400 light years from Earth
- Size: Around 110 light years (entire Veil Nebula complex)
- Apparent size: 120 x 6 arc minutes (for the Eastern Veil)
- Apparent magnitude: 7.0
- Age: Approximately 8,000 years
- Constellation: Cygnus
The Eastern Veil Nebula (seen in this image) is just a part of the larger Veil Nebula, also known as the Cygnus Loop. The Veil Nebula is a spectacular example of the fate of massive stars, which end their lives in spectacular supernova explosions that leave behind beautiful structures in the cosmos. The supernova is estimated to have happened between 5,000 and 10,000 years ago, and the shockwave from the originating supernova has been expanding ever since. As the shockwave interacts with the surrounding interstellar medium, it forms the intricate, delicate patterns and structures that make this nebula so beautiful.
This image is processed in HOO, meaning the Hydrogen-alpha (Ha) data is assigned to the red channel, while the doubly ionized Oxygen (OIII) data is mapped to both the green and blue channels. This allows us to visualize the gases and their interactions within this nebula.
14 hours integration time (6 hours of Oiii and 8 hours of Ha)
