Description

M81 is a grand design spiral galaxy and is about half the size of the Milky Way. It contains a massive black hole. M81 is also known as Bode's galaxy in honor of Mr Bode who first discovered it. This galaxy and its heighboring M82 cigar shaped galaxy are awash in what is called the integrated flux nebula or IFN, so called because it is believed that it is formed by the additive or integrated flux of multiple stars in the galaxy. IFN can be seen as diffuse "clouds".
