Description

NGC 1232, also known as the Eye of God Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy located in the constellation Eridanus. It was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel in 1784.

NGC 1232 is a large spiral galaxy that is about 200,000 light-years across, which is almost twice the size of the Milky Way. It is dominated by millions of bright stars and dark dust, with spiral arms rotating around the center. Open clusters containing bright blue stars are sprinkled along these spiral arms, with dark lanes of dense interstellar dust between. Less visible are the central areas older dimmer stars of a reddish color and interstellar gas, comprising such a high mass that they dominate the dynamics of the inner galaxy.
