Description

ABOUT THE IMAGE

Earlier this year, the Big Amateur Telescope (BAT) captured data on yet another galaxy. Chosen was none other than the Pinwheel Galaxy, also known as M101!
The goal originally also included some slightly more widefield capture of its neighboring galaxies NGC 5474 and NGC 5422. However, due to the tight FOV of most of our member's telescopes, we decided to focus on a close up of M101.

Thanks to the very deep integration time of our image, we managed to capture wonderful intricate details of this galaxy. The bright core was sharpened with only the sharpest luminance data. For the fainter areas of M101, over 55hrs of combined luminance data (OSC data was converted to luminance) was used! Check out all of the distant galaxies in the background of M101!

DATA USED

Lum: 55,62hrs
RGB: 16.5hrs Red, 14.15hrs Green, 14.4hrs Blue
Ha:   5.15hrs
Total: 105.84hrs

In particular, I'd like to thank everyone who was involved in the creation of this image. Please check out their profiles. They deserve some recognition!

ABOUT THE "BAT"

Please check the link below if you are interested in joining the BAT. We are always interested in new members and do monthly group projects encompassing wide-field targets, high resolution projects all the way to seasonal mega projects like Hubble's Variable Nebula and M81/82, as can be seen in our previous Astrobin posts. Membership is free and comes with no obligations other than being friendly and enthusiastic about astrophotography!
