Description

M106 is the largest and the most prominent Canes II galaxy group member. It’s about 24 million light-years away in the Canes Vanatici constellation, located in the Big Dipper area. It is classified as a Seyfert galaxy, most likely having an active galactic nucleus. There is speculation that part of the galaxy is being gobbled up by a supermassive black hole near the center.

The major galaxies in the image are NGC 4258 (M-106), NGC 4217, NGC 4226, NGC 4232, NGC 4231 and NGC 4248.

If you zoom in on the image you'll find a lot of small background galaxies, some looking like streaks of colored light and others with a fair bit of detail.

This image comprises 12 hours of LRGB data and 12 hours of Ha data acquired by TARO in May of 2022.
