My first "real" telescope was a Meade ETX90mm Maksutov-Cassegrain which was a big upgrade from the Sears brand refractor I got for Christmas as a kid . Over the years, I have primarily been a visual observer but recently made the change to astrophotography. It is amazing to see what's available to us today - quality equipment and amazing software at prices that only universities or government agencies could afford previously. My current stable of telescopes include a Meade series 600 115mm F7 triplet APO refractor , Explore Scientific 152mm achromat refractor, and a Celestron C8 2032mm SCT.
