Description

Sh2-308 (also known as Sharpless 308, RCW 11, LBN 1052 or commonly as Dolphin Head Nebula) is an emission nebula visible in the constellation Canis Major which is located in the central part of the constellation, about 8° south of Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky.
Sh2-308 is the large bubble surrounding the sixth-magnitude Wolf-Rayet star WR 6, also known as EZ Canis Majoris (EZ CMa). This cloud originated about 70000 years ago due to the expulsions of matter lost by the star, which, due to its strong stellar wind, was arranged all around it to form a bubble structure. The extension of the cloud is approximately 19 light years and its distance is estimated at around 1875 light years.
