Description

Sh2-119, commonly known as the Clamshell Nebula, is a large emission nebula in the constellation of Cygnus. It features many dark dust lanes, Bok globules and interesting linear structures.  It is predominantly Ha, but does have a reasonable amount of Oiii too. I didn't capture any Sii, so not sure what that would yield.

The bright star in the middle of the Clam, reminiscent of a pearl, is 68 Cygni, approx 4600 light years away. This is a massive star, estimated at 26 x our solar mass, well on its way to becoming a supergiant. The star is moving quite rapidly and its stellar wind is compressing a blue bow shock wave in front of it. The Sh2-119 nebula surrounding this star is classified as a Strömgren sphere.

This was captured as 17 hours of 20-minute exposures using the Antlia ALP-T dual 5nm filter, during 12 nights of August 2022 from my garden in England.   Stars were replaced with a stack of L-Pro images.
