NGC 6188: The Dragons of Ara

The Dragons of Ara (NGC 6188) is one of my favourite targets for HOO processing. In fact, it was this emission nebula that led me to initially buy a dual-narrowband filter a year ago, after several lacklustre attempts to capture it in broadband.

In this image, I augmented the starless dual-narrowband image with broadband stars. Usually, I'll simply capture some colour information with some token broadband exposures, and use it to colour-correct the smattering of narrowband stars. However, in this case, I decided to put the stars front-and-centre, rather than trying to reduce and diminish them.

The data was captured by a (very) heavily modified GSO 6" f/4 Newtonian. I picked this up new during a local sale for AU$350, then proceeded to entirely re-work it. Changes to the primary cell to aid collimation stability, remounting the secondary to remove astigmatism, moving the focuser to bring the focal plane in closer, reinforcing the focuser... plus the usual flocking, baffling, installing a fan. All cheap and cheerful mods that have made this into a useful little imaging tool. This is the first image I've captured since I fully completed these modifications, so I'm happy for it to be my first on AstroBin.

Submitted The date and time when you submitted this image for IOTD/TP consideration.	...
Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
