Description

I spotted Sh2-180 while browsing my recent Gamma Cassiopeia wide field, and I was immediately fascinated by this remote and mysterious object placed nearly 20000 ly away.
On the first clear night, I took a closer look with my 1000mm focal.

Sh2-180 is visible in the direction of the Perseus arm Cas OB7 association, but the recent distance estimates tell that its location is in the Outer arm, as shown in the picture below.
It is generally identified as a HII region, for instance in Simbad, but some comments online go in the direction that it might instead be a supernova remnant, due to its filamentary structure.
Looking at this close-up I would tend to confirm that this is a HII region, even some tadpoles are visible in the starless revision. This is of course a layman opinion, and only scientific work can seriously solve the question. Yet its similarity to the Hii region Sh2-183 (also located in the Outer arm just a little further north) makes me vote in favor of the Hii solution.
