Description

We have all done M16 one way or another. Here are three versions of that special part, The Pillars of Creation. The one on the left is my version from my Planewave 20" CDK. The second is from Hubble and the third from data downloaded from the JWST. The JWST image I created from the five filter images downloaded from the Mikulski archive. Colors were mapped from blue to red starting from the shortest to the longest IR filter images.

Do notice how the JWST images pierces through most of the dust associated with the Pillars and reveals more of the structure of the nebula.

If you have not yet experimented with this data set, I encourage you to do so. Here is the link to the portal (https://mast.stsci.edu/portal/Mashup/Clients/Mast/Portal.html). Select M16 as your target, then JWST. There are eight filter archives. five are of the full pillars. Those are what I used to construct the JWST image. It did not align perfectly with the HST image I used for registration. That accounts for the black areas in the JWST image.

You can use your own imagination when mapping those five images. I used a conventional approach, but there are many other mapping schemes. I encouraged you to experiment and have fun.
