Description

GUM 10/11 (Emission Nebulae)

Back in Feb 2021 I published an image showing GUM 11 (the top part of this image, see https://www.astrobin.com/76pc30/B/), I was fascinated by this image and eager to photograph the whole region. This opportunity came recently and I'm very pleased with the outcome.

Red and Black ?
Emission nebulae emit light in wavelengths that are visible. They tend to be red because Hydrogen, which is the most abundant element in the universe. Hydrogen emits red light when ionized by the ultraviolet radiation from hot blue stars in the nebula.  The dark patches along Gum 10 are dense clouds of dust that partially block the view of the objects behind them.
