Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a faint planetary nebula located 6600 light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a southerly declination of -29 degrees.  It is a magnitude 16 PN which spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view.  This corresponds to the typical PN diameter of 2 light years.

The progenitor star is seen as the characteristic blue star at the center of the nebula.  It appears that interaction with dense ISM at 11 o’clock is causing a brighter arc-like signal on that portion of the nebula rim.  The signal towards the center of the PN is faint.

Overall, this PN looks similar to Kohoutek 2-7.

The Kohoutek catalog contains PN discovered by the Czech astronomer Dr. Luboš Kohoutek. Dr. Kohoutek discovered over 300 new PNe over his lifetime, many of which now bear his name. The 1500 objects in his catalogue are numbered according to the publication order that they appeared, so the catalog consists of objects designated K 1-xx, K 2-xx, and K 3-xx (up to K 6-xx) corresponding to their discovery publication. The larger, brighter and more interesting objects are generally from the first (1-xx) published series of objects. As the list progresses to 2-xx, 3-xx, and beyond, the objects become smaller, more faint and more challenging to image.
