Description

M17 in Sagittarius is a bright emission nebula commonly known as the Swan or Omega Nebula.  First noted by the Swiss astronomer de Cheseaux in 1764, it was observed by Messier and added to his list later that year.  Messier described it as "A train of light without stars, of 5 or 6 minutes in extent, in the shape of a spindle."  He probably could only see the central core, which presents a bright spine or ridge-like structure.  Williams Huggins studied its light with a spectroscope in 1866, and established that the object was in fact a cloud of glowing ionized gas.

This image is the result of two nights of imaging...I collected most of the hydrogen alpha and oxygen data on July 17, but gusty winds starting and around midnight and a layer of clouds at 2am cut things short in the middle of the sulfur sequence.  The forecast for the 18th wasn't promising but I set everything up and it imaged away all night long, adding RGB and additional SII and OIII data  Altogether I got 45x30 seconds each RGB, 15x300 seconds Ha, 26x300 OIII, and 28x300 SII, for a total of almost 7 hours of exposures.

This image is a milestone...with this I have at least one image of all 110 Messier objects (of varying quality).

Title: RGB + HOO

Description: Much of the detail is in the SII, so that is lost in this version

Description: For this version I boosted the SII a bit, and set the black point to reduce some of the background...although there is real signal there I think that makes it more dramatic.
